Franconia 'Cuvee' QbA 2006

This wine is a special 'project' wine from a cutting edge German wine business called Wineconsale. Wineconsale market a number of German Estate worldwide including Schloss Vollrads, Tesch and St Urbans-Hof. This wine is sealed with a glass clusure called Vino-Lok and it really is an amazing seal; it makes screwcaps look absolete!! Quite a pure and powerful nose, with hints of pear, honey dew and minerals. Whilst it is dry on the palate, it is quite full in flavour and in some ways this wine share plenty of similarities with Viogner (just with a lot more acidity). A very satisfying wine. Anthony D'Anna

A blend of 40% Rivaner, 40% Bacchus and 20% Silvaner, the 2006 Franconia is scented and soft yet crisp on the finish, making it eminently appealing and drinkable. It is produced from the ripest grapes on the estates 175 hectares of vineyard, the more southerly location of which results in a dry style of German wine without the boniness that characterises many a trocken.

FRANCONIA – The Region

The so-called „Bocksbeutel"is a squat green flagon and the trademark of the traditional wine from Franken bearing the same name. Originally, only wines produced in Würzburg could be bottled in the Bocksbeutel. Nowadays this distinctive bottle is representative for the entire region. Despite this unmistakeable trademark we decided to use a different type of bottle for our wine, further details of which can be found in the rubric pertaining to packaging.

The people of Franken are proud of the innumerable places of interest, the beautiful countryside and rich history, all of which visitors to this wine-growing area experience with every step they take. It comes as no surprise therefore that the centuries-old town of Sommerhausen bears witness to Medieval times. This is an important centre for all kinds of artists, including those who do not indulge in the art of winemaking.

Franken’s metropolis of Würzburg is dominated by Baroque architecture, the finest example of which is the magnificent Imperial Hall of the Prince-Bishop’s Residence, also known as the Würzburg Residence. The Würzburg Residence is also the venue for the annual Baroque festivities.

Franken’s vineyards extend over an area of approximately 6,100 hectares. Silvaner and Franken compose an inseparable entity. It is true to say that the Silvaner grapes from this region are absolutely unsurpassable. This is why each vintage of FRANCONIA wine embraces a proportion of Silvaner. Wines of an internationally acclaimed calibre are cultivated on the steep slopes along the River Main. Even Kurt Tucholsky described wines from Franken as being as "deep and pure as the sound of a bell" and regretted that something so treasurable could not be "caressed".

Although Silvaner is indisputably the Queen of Franken, classics such as Kerner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus and Scheurebe also thrive optimally in Franken’s vineyards.

In order to ensure that the wine is not impaired on its way to the customer, we also place a lot of emphasis on deploying a user-friendly closure of good quality. This is why we started using the Vino-Lok as of the 2005 vintage of FRANCONIA. This is a modern and pristine glass closure which does not affect the taste of the wine in any way; the use of this closure has already proven to be very advantageous. The bottle can be re-sealed easily, fits into any fridge and the wine retains it freshness far longer.

Just as in the case of champagne or whisky, we regard the blending of individual grape varieties into one wine as a creative process and an art in itself.

Each stage of the production process is carefully supervised and monitored, beginning with the harvest when only physiologically fully ripened grapes are picked by hand. By deploying modern apparatus we ensure that the grapes are pressed gently, whilst concomitantly achieving an optimum must yield. This process does not damage the pips. The stems are removed prior to pressing. The pomace (pressed grape skins) can be used to produce Marc, as it still contains enough juice.

Once the grapes have been pressed, the must is checked and then left to ferment slowly in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 15° to 16°C. Only stainless steel tanks are used as this guarantees that the pure aroma of each grape variety is preserved. We do not allow the use of aromatised yeast in the production process or the use of wooden vats, as wood can also influence the aroma of the grape varieties. Once the basic wine has been created, it is taken off the yeast and stored in stainless steel tanks until it is blended with other grape varieties to make a FRANCONIA wine.

This "marriage" only begins a considerable time after fermentation has ended and the wines have settled.

One of Franken’s most reputable winemakers is responsible for making the Cuvée. He also monitors the entire production process and often selects the grapes he wants to use for the production of FRANCONIA during the summer.

Blending requires an in-depth knowledge, experience and great craftsmanship, all of which our winemaker has, without a shadow of a doubt. Impressive proof of his skill is his own family wine estate in Sommerhausen, which has a long-standing history and wine-making tradition spanning a period of several centuries. In addition, this wine estate is a member of the elicit „VDP – Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweinerzeuger".

Once production has finished, we have created a wine of the highest standard. It is fruity, elegant and has a well-balanced bouquet. It is dry in taste, full-bodied and has a good complexity of fine fruit aromas combined with a well-balanced acidity. Its long finish awakens the appetite for more.

We recommend that this wine be enjoyed well-cooled, at a temperature of 8° to 10°C. It is an ideal accompaniment to pork, poultry and fish dishes, as well as to Asian and Mediterranean cuisine.
