Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon 2003

A 100 per cent Semillon sourced primarily from Mount Pleasant’s Lovedale and Middle Creek vineyards, with the balance from a selection of the best and oldest vineyard sites in Pokolbin, in the lower Hunter Valley. The grapes were hand picked in February. Rain periods during spring and early summer, coupled with unseasonably cool weather, produced even flowering and fruit set. The vintage produced whites with great depth of flavour supported by excellent acidity, which gave the final wines good length and maturing potential. - Mount Pleasant

McWilliam's Elizabeth and the glorious Lovedale Semillon are generally commercially available with many years of bottle age and are undervalued and underpriced treasures with a consistently superb show record. The three individual vineyard wines, together with the Maurice O'Shea memorial wines, add to the lustre of this proud name. Exports to many countries, the most important being the UK, the US, Germany and New Zealand. James Halliday

A wine with an exceptional pedigree and deserved reputation for consistency, yet chronically underpriced and hence underrated (or the reverse, I am not sure which). Changes to the packaging, notably the bottle shape, and the hand of McWilliam's chief executive Kevin McLintock may well see the wine gradually being repositioned in the market to assume its rightful place. Even without this, an undoubted classic, having won more than 26 trophies and 161 gold medals since 1981. James Halliday

A true Australian classic. Released with a few years age, Elizabeth eptomises the subtle Hunter Semillon that builds improbable depth and complexity with time. Ralph Kyte-Powell
