The Story Orphan Grampians Shiraz 2005

There is a good story to this. Winemaker Rory Lane takes small batches of Grampians fruit and makes them into wine in a little factory apartment in Melbourne. The fruit for this vintage is sourced from the Westgate and Robinson Vineyards (of Mount Langi fame) and it includes a portion of whole bunch action in the ferment which really lift the aromatics.

Aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, pepper, spice, chocolate, meat and creamy French vanilla oak. Perfumed and exotic. On the palate medium bodied with dark cherry, spice, pepper, chocolate and some meaty flavours with quality oak adding a little creamy vanilla. The tannins are very smooth and fine grained and it feels lovely and supple in the mouth. A bit more weight on the back palate and I’d rate it through the roof (although it did fill out after being open for a day). This is an artisanal wine dripping with love and regionality and comes with a strong buy recommendation from me. 92 points Gary Walsh, Winorama

...it runs the length of your tongue, carrying with it medium-weight flavours of kirsch, blueberry, fresh leather and cherries. Cedary oak is evident, but underplayed. There’s a stamp of class to this. A long, toasty, smoky finish takes it out. It’s a serious wine. Drink: 2008-2015. 92 points. Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront

The Story 2005 ‘orphan’ Shiraz exhibits wild briar, warm spices and a long, drawn-out blackberry and plum palate with rich, meaty, spicy, yet well integrated tannins. An elegant package that balances power and delicacy, it shows classic Grampians black pepper, backed up by layers of deep ripe red and black fruits and fine supporting French oak. An ultra boutique offering, only 360 cases were made in The Story’s urban Melbourne winery.
