Many Victorian Pinot Noir producers make 'second' wines these days, slotting in below the main estate wine. Quality varies. There are unpleasantly green, bitter wines, and oxidised, stale ones, but improving viticultural and winemaking knowledge, and maturing vineyards, are consistently improving the standard. One of the most distinctively named Pinot producers we came across in the last few weeks also manages to make some of the finest wine, Curly Flat of the Macedon Ranges, Australia’s coolest wine region less than an hour north west of Melbourne airport.
