Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

6 BOTTLES AVAILABLE.

South Australia's Coonawarra is one of the classic Cabernet-producing regions of Australia, once described as the 'Medoc of the Southern Hemisphere' and, truly, Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon can be disarmingly like Bordeaux when young. Recently Coonawarra has experienced four outstanding or above average vintages in a row - 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. This gift of nature has given the ammunition this region needs to bring back focus to its wonderful Cabernets. Andrew Calliard MW

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is referred to as Black Label. This wine, more than any other, has helped define Coonawarra. In a super vintage, this wine can look alarmingly like a second or third growth Bordeaux with its pure cassis aromas and cedary complexity. The wines are matured in a combination of new and old American and French oak for between 12 and 18 months depending on vintage. Andrew Calliard MW

Given the volume in which this wine is made (said to be over 40 000 cases) it has to be the most important Cabernet in Australia, a powerful testament to the synergy between Coonawarra and Cabernet Sauvignon. Another dyed-in-the-wool classic with a magnificent history. James Halliday

The wine was first produced in 1954 and for many years has been one of Wynns' most popular releases. The 2001 release continues Wynns' tradition of delivering Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon at its very best. Produced from only the top 25 per cent of available Cabernet grapes, this wine has a long established reputation for displaying excellent Coonawarra Cabernet varietal definition and exceptionally high wine quality. When young, the wine is redolent of cassis and other red berry fruits with a strong background of charry oak. Ground coffee, dark chocolate and mint descriptors are often used.

Vintage Conditions: Good winter rains gave Coonawarra a very good start to the season. Fruit set was excellent, and careful vineyard management including 'green harvesting' to remove heavy crops aided in controlling yields. March rainfall delayed the harvest, but April and May were fine and mild and the fruit was picked in good condition.

Maturation: The wine was aged in a combination of new and old American and French oak for 14 months.

The nose shows aromas of ripe plum and blackcurrant with mocha coffee / chocolate notes and underlying hints of mint-leaf and violets. It has good depth and promises to develop substantially over the course of its cellaring. The wine offers a boldly flavoured core of ripe berries wrapped in finely textured, velvety tannins. It has excellent depth and finesse, with highly integrated oak and a silky, creamy coffee finish. The overall harmony of fruit concentration and structure will enable this wine to mature in bottle for many years, whilst offering very agreeable drinking in the shorter term. Winemaker Sue Hodder

A complex interaction of blackberry fruit and French oak; rich but supple fruit and ripe tannins; complete, well balanced. Drink: 2016. 93 points James Halliday Wine Companion 2005

An excellent Wynns vintage, with youthful colour and a bouquet that recalls violets and other flowers, with a distinct kirsch-like note. Fragrant and delicious. The palate is elegantly weighted and finely structured. Best now to 20 years. Huon Hooke

2001 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Coonawarra, Australia). Summary: This "complex, layered" crimson beauty exuded an array of aromas ranging from raisins and vanilla to cloves, currants and leather. It reminded tasters of cherries atop a vanilla cola with its peppery explosion of fruit, spicy mint and cedar. Quite lengthy on the finish, it boasted moderate tannins and vanilla-soaked oak. Food Friendliness: It's almost good enough to eat, er, drink on its own, but would enjoy the company of a juicy bison burger or gilled game entree. Wine Report - U.S. 90 Points
