Lillian Pemberton Shiraz Mataro 2001

Good colour; medium bodied; supple texture and mouthfeel with spicy black cherry fruit; fine ripe tannins. 91 points James Halliday

Named after hid great-aunt Lillian (who first introduced hom to drinking wine as a school boy), John Brocksopp established Lillian in 1993. After a long and varied career, most recently as Leeuwin Estate's long-serving viticulturalist, John decided to concentrate on developing his interest in Marsanne and Rousanne.

Starting his career in 1967 with Seppelts at Barooga - Rutherglen, one of John's jobs was to evaluate some of the varieties that now make up Australia's predominant styles, before anyone had really made any new plantings of them. Marsanne was one variety that John evaluated and rated highly in the Seppelts days, as was Rousanne. However it was upon 'retirement' that he has been able to do something about it!!
