Bass Fine Wines Strait Pinot Noir 2007
Bass Fine Wines runs entirely counter to the usual Tasmanian pattern of tiny, estate-based businesses. Guy Wagner has set up Bass as a classic negociant operation, working backwards from the marketplace. He is currently completing through a wine marketing degree at the University of Adelaide and intends to continue studies in oenology and viticulture while being involved in the making of the wines by contract makers Jim Chatto and Andrew Hood. The wines have been purchased from various vineyards in bottle and in barrel, but from the 2000 vintage also purchased as grapes. The winery has been set up as a Pinot Noir specialist with three levels of Pinot in the business plan, commencing with Strait Pinot in the fighting sector of the market, then Bass as a premium brand, and ultimately there will be a super-premium Pinot, possibly to come from 30-year-old plantings which have been contracted.
