Devils Lair Margaret River Cabernet Merlot 2004

When I tried this on release a couple of years ago it did not do much for me and after trying so many fantastic 2004 vintage Margaret River Cabernets on the weekend I thought it deserved another chance.

Well I am glad I did revisit it as it has really improved since the last time I tried a bottle. Dark purple in colour; the palate is a mix of blueberry, gravel, dark chocolate, graphite and some sweet dark cherries to finish. Only critisism would be that I would have like a little more palate length but it is a highly enjoyably wine that should hold and drink well for the next ten years. 92 points Anthony D'Anna

This is a very nice wine, but it lacks the oomph and carry to justify the price. That said, not a hair is out of place. Blackcurrant, cedar, chocolate, dry dusted tobacco, raisins - it's exactly the kind of flavour profile you would hope for. There's also an appropriate amount of fine, ripe tannins and lively acidity. It's just the mid-palate weight, and persistence, that rob it of higher points. Drink: 2011-2017. 89 points. Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront
