Rokewood Junction Pinot Noir 2007

Western District farmer Graham Jacobsson planted 0.5 ha of pinot noir on a steep north-facing slope in 1995. There are vertical slabs of shaley rock both under and on the surface, and the roots of the vines penetrate the fissures. With no top soil and a very windy, exposed site, the vineyard is basically devoid of diseases, and minimal vineyard intervention is needed. For a period of time, Jacobsson sold his grapes to Tomboy Hill, but since 2005 has made wine under his own label. No samples received; the rating is that of last year. James Halliday

The vineyard is situated at Rokewood Junction, 30 kms south of Ballarat. The vines are hand pruned and picked and matured in French Oak. Purple in colour. The nose is a mix of spice, raspberry and cherry fruit. The oak is stinking out on the palate at the moment along with rhubarb, rose petal, violets and cherries. Plenty of acidity should keep this wine together for the next 3-5 years. 88 points Anthony D'Anna
