RODA 1 Reserva Tempranillo 2003

Fairly dark in the glass, with a bright cherry edge. The nose shows great blackcurrant fruit with toasty oak, freshly ground coffee, smoke and cinnamon. A note of strong anise mellows out to liquorice/sarsaparilla with a bit of time. Gorgeous, concentrated blackcurrant and mulberry fruit on the palate with mocha and some minerally notes. Really primary at this stage, the potential is clear: great balance, a good wack of acid and oak in all the right places. Tannin obsessives will be happy, as usual, the tannins are outstanding and add great texture. Stick this somewhere dark and cool for at least two years, and you'll be very happy with yourself for the next 15. 94 Pts.Dave Worthington, Tinto y Blanco

The 'grand cru' of Rioja. Viticultural fanatics; very plush, velvety fruit/tannin synthesis is their aim. 100% tempranillo - varietal core of cola/berry run through with licorice, minerals, bramble, dark truffle, mahogany, florals, sweet dark earth ... & trademark Roda fruit tannins. Very long, expressive, yet remains fresh to finish. 16 months in french oak, 55% new. The first vintage of the winery in question - Bodegas Roda - was made in 1991. Like most New World wineries, it was a greenfields venture. The site was selected in the Rioja Alta in the mid 1980s, when the estate vineyards were planted, followed by the winery in time for the '91 vintage.
