Like most major wine regions in the world, Burgundy makes a sparkling wine, Crémant de Bourgogne. It is a great shame that the sparkling wines of Burgundy are not better known, because the quality is exceptional. If you've ever been disappointed by Champagne, try some Crémant de Bourgogne - it's a revelation. It's also better and cheaper. It's made using the "Méthode Traditionelle" - the same way wines are made in Champagne - but because these wines don't originate from the Champagne region, you don't pay the premium associated with the name.
Friday night home-made fish and chips at my WWD friends place usually starts off with a sparkling white or red and I often take along a NV Champagne. Last night it was French NV but not Champagne. It was a bottle of Jobert de Leandre Cremant de Bourgogne Brut. We were all quite impressed with this (the others more so when I told them the price after the first glass), lively fine mousse, hint of pink tinge at the edge, hints of yeast lees on the nose, the palate is finely balanced, with freshness, creamy mouthfeel and again hints of some aged material in the blend. It only needs a touch more acid to carry the finish and it would really be a class act. Without that it is just a very nice drink and a bargain compared to some of the cheap NV champagnes around.
