Jim Barry is a well-established and traditional maker of Clare Valley reds, although it has recently developed a vineyard on the former Penola cricket ground in the southern sector of Coonawarra. Its stable includes the redoubtable The Armagh Shiraz, long considered to be one of the genuine rivals to Penfolds Grange. Recent vintages have seen it take a turn towards more concentrated and alcoholic styles, of which the 2002 is a classic and high-quality example. Its premier rieslings are bottled under ‘The Florita’ label. Jeremy Oliver
