Straight after the finish of the 2002 vintage we heard many great things about the quality of the white wines for 2002. However, we hear a lot of things! Well after trying many of the 2002 vintage whites, I wrote a piece called ‘A common thread: the quality of whites for 2002’ and for me that is when it really sunk in that we had a killer vintage on our hands. Those who think Riesling sales are in decline have ‘rocks in their head’. Never in our time at Boccaccio (nearly forty years) have we ever sold so much Riesling. Leading the way has been the likes of Petaluma, O’Leary Walker, Richmond Grove, St Hallett and Tim Adams; with sales of Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling now racing past 500 dozen.
This is a very good Riesling, the 2001 was a lot more floral and had a broader flavor spectrum when released but there is no doubt this is a keeper. Plenty of acidity and bucket loads of tangy lemon and lime flavors dominate the palate at the moment and this should age into a classic Petaluma Riesling. - 95/100 Anthony D'Anna
