Meerea Park Hell Hole Hunter Valley Shiraz 2005

ONE BOTTLE AVAILABLE.

The Hell Hole this vintage now has a very attractive buff colour label but I don’t have the most recent bottle image. Being buff is so hot right now but in this instance you will just have to imagine it. I know most commentators prefer the 05 Alexander Munro (Lincoln included) to this wine but I’ll stand my ground and plant my flag firmly in the medium bodied Hunter earth. Some things are worth standing up for (every now and then mind ) and this wine is a beauty.

Aromas of blackberry, ripe cherry, pepper, earth, violets and toasty vanilla oak. On the palate medium to full bodied with rich ripe blackberry, sweet cherry, vanilla cream, spice and more earthy flavours. It has a super supple texture with magnificent creamy tannins and enormous length of flavour. Everything in place for a classic cellaring style although it is so well balanced you might have difficulty keeping your hands off it. Drink : 2008 - 2025 96 points Gary Walsh, Winorama

Ah well, another Meerea Park wine from the 2005 vintage. It has probably been said before, but this vintage is looking pretty good for the old Hunter. I had this side-by-side with the 2005 Alexander Munro, and it made for an interesting comparison. Red, with a dash of purple. Earth, black cherries, delectable fruits, some meat and some dry spices. The palate is medium bodied, peerless fruits and seemless tannins, soft and black, with squidgy tannins, a lovely softness and is beautifully oaked. It would be a tough choice to decide between the two wines, but if I had to I would go for the Munro, but then buy both wines, because they both provide a most excellent adventure, just a different vista. Drink : 2010 - 2015+ 94 points Lincoln Scott, Winorama
