The famous Winorama gabion wall still makes the odd guest appearance in photos but only under certain circumstances. They invariably involve boutique wines with a lack of bottle shot and a tasting conducted under non-scientific conditions i.e. at home or taken out to dinner. This is the first release of a straight merlot from Hillcrest, and because the vines are young and productive (much like myself), they go under the Village label….which always makes me think of ‘The Village Idiot’ (of which I will say little more).
Aromas of blackcurrant and bramble fruit, black olive, subtle mocha oak and just a tiny smear of menthol. Rich and varietal. On the palate medium to full bodied with black fruit, dark chocolate, black olive and subtle oak. A wine of depth and density. It has plenty of smooth powdery ‘Greek coffee’ tannins and good natural acid balance. Finishes with savoury black fruited flavours. I love good Merlot and this wine made me very happy.
