Lake Breeze Bernoota Shiraz Cabernet 2005
awards:
2008 Sydney Royal Wine Show GOLD MEDAL class 20
"Bernoota is an institution among Aussie wine drinkers in the know. The Follett family has been blending Cabernet and Shiraz from their Langhorne Creek vineyards under this label for more than a decade, and the standard has never wavered. Just to prove its consistency, Bernoota was one of the first wines to ever score a hat-trick of medals in The Great Australian Red… You know you’re onto a sure winner when you can pick up a wine of such concentration for less than $20. This is the classic Aussie blend, a big wine built on brilliantly spicy fruit and classy oak. You could take out half an army with a Bernoota. 2005 Bernoota featured in the best 365 wines of 2008 in the 'Taste Food & Wine 2008' publication, collated by Tyson Stelzer and Matthew Jukes.
A perennially reliable red, with a deep, dark colour and aromas of crushed leaf and cassis, mint and sweetly ripened fruit. A very good wine with some elegance. Cabernet and shiraz are both apparent." Gourmet Traveller WINE Huon Hooke - Feb/Mar 2008 2005 'Bernoota' 91 pts
The Bernoota wine seems to be growing in stature every year. Hot after the 2004 winning a bucket load of awards comes this beauty... Look up the word consistency in the Dictionary and you're sure to find the word 'BERNOOTA'." 2005 ‘Bernoota’ "When the Follett family turn their attention to it they’re virtually untouchable in the shiraz cabernet blending stakes. Unbeatable value, this has classic deep chocolate and mint, earthy and supple, the oak’s well served and thoroughly balanced." Selected in the TOP 10. "No Apologies, Just What's Hot" - Nick Stock - 2007 Adel Review HOT 100
Bernoota’ was the original name given to the homestead on the Lake Breeze property – it is an Aboriginal name for ‘camp among the gum trees’.
The 2005 ‘Bernoota’ is a blend of Shiraz (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), carefully selected from old vines on the Follett family vineyard.
The wine was fermented on skins in open static fermenters for 7-10 days, followed by maturation for 20 months in American and French oak barriques. The wine shows dark fruit characters of blackberry and plums, with a hint of spice and smoky oak aromas. The palate encompasses all of the trademark Langhorne Creek fruit sweetness and soft tannins. Although extremely palatable now, it will mature gracefully with correct cellaring for the next 8-10 years.
