Seppelt St Peters Great Western Shiraz 1999

It has superb style and balance, with earthy berry, spice and sweet leather elements in more-ish harmony. Ralph Kyte-Powell

Complex and opulent blackberry, spice, licorice and plum, velvety mounthfeel, fully ripe tannins and balanced oak. Drink: 2014. 95 Points James Halliday Wine Companion 2005 - Australia

This continues to be a very honest regional red of distinction and class. It has a restrained nose of spice, earth, raspberry and seasoned leather. In the mouth it's harmonious, long and smooth. Other reds demand more attention at first, this one grows on you gradually...then suddenly the bottle's empty and you're opening another! Try it with braised veal shanks. 5 stars The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide - Australia Huon Hooke, Ralph Kyte-Powell

An excellent example of shiraz made from fruit from old low-yielding vines, this has plum and blackberry fruit with a touch of spice and pepper, smoky oak and fine tannins. Good now with lamb or beef - even better in five years. Mike Frost Courier Mail - Australia

A majority of a dozen tasters at Chateau Shanahan last Saturday rated this favourite of three superb, contrasting, top-shelf Aussie shirazes...St Peters was like liquid silk - an extraordinarily plush, rich, soft red packed with savoury cool-climate shiraz flavours. Sourced from the same vineyard as Colin Preece reds of the mid-20th century, this is simply one of the very best reds in Australia and one of the last to be made by Ian "Macka" McKenzie before his retirement. Chris Shanahan Sunday Canberra Times - Australia

Seppelt Great Western Vineyard Shiraz, from Victoria's Grampians region, has been a benchmark for more than 50 years and many old wines still open well. However, we greatly preferred the younger wine on this occasion. The 1999 now carries the St Peters tag - the name of this old shiraz vineyard. It has a deep purple colour and very rich nose to match. Otton said: "Intense mulberry, briar - a deep well of fruit. Very plush." That ripe, concentrated fruit shows on the palate too, with chocolate, spice and even a hint of jam, but the overall balance is excellent, finishing with soft tannins. We thought the 1995, from a drought year, was going through a tough phase. The nose is very good - complex, with developing chocolate, camphor and gamy characters - but the palate is quite and chewy, with tannins to the fore. But this should have no bearing on other vintages, in particular the 1999, which has a great future. The 1995 should come around as well, with time. Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine - Australia

This is a glorious shiraz. The colour is dense purple-red and it smells complex, with aromas of smoked meats, new leather, licorice and plum-jam, with spicy regional overtones. Soft, chewy and deep on the palate, it has chocolatey flavours, great texture and persistence. Drink with Heidi gruyere cheese. Huon Hooke Sydney Morning Herald - Australia
