Domain de la Vougeraie Gevrey Chambertin 2006 375ml
10 BOTTLES AVAILABLE.
Tasting note: Earthy and distinctly animale aromas add undertones to the more deeply pitched nose of mostly dark berry fruit but there is a touch of red pinot top notes, all trimmed in noticeable but not dominant wood that is picked up by the equally earthy and animale-suffused medium-bodied flavors that are rich, intense and firm. This is very Gevrey at present if it can add a bit more depth in bottle, it should make for a lovely villages. Drink: 2012+ 86-89 points Alan Meadows, Burghound
Producer note: Winemaker Pierre Vincent (formerly of Maison Jaffelin) declared that 2006 was "the first vintage where I was responsible for everything from start to finish. July was extremely hot, August was very cool if not cold and September was quite warm without actually being hot. We began picking on September 18th with the whites but waited until the 25th to start on the reds. There was a lot of sorting required and we probably threw out around 15% of the crop because it wasn't to our standards. Because there was more rain in the Côte de Beaune than the Côte de Nuits, I also elected to do saignée (a process whereby unfermented juice is siphoned off with the goal of increasing the solid to liquid ratio) for the southern reds. I have also changed the vinification somewhat as Pascal Marchand (the prior winemaker) typically did three punch downs per day whereas I did one and then gave the musts five days of post-fermentation maceration but no heating. In total, I gave the reds a relatively long total cuvaison of between 20 and 28 days, depending on the appellation. As to the wines themselves, I think they very much respected the classification hierarchy and are pure, refined and will age well but be accessible young." As the scores and comments suggest, this is a very solid set of wines and as Vincent intimated in his comments, the style of the de Vougeraie wines has definitely changed. As readers know, I do not take a qualitative position as it relates to style but it would be fair to say that the robust style that Marchand preferred has been replaced by a finer and more elegant one, trading power for finesse and it will be up to you to decide whether it's more to your taste or not.
