SC Pannell Pronto White 2008

4.5 Stars. Former head of Hardy’s winemaking Steve Pannell is doing great things under his own label. His sophisticated winemaking knowledge and world view has created some interesting modern Australian wines worth looking out for. This Adelaide Hills sauvignon blanc-riesling-pinot gris combo makes three quite disparate grape varieties into something harmonious, without losing their varietal strengths in the blend. It’s appetising with zesty lime aromas, hints of pear and peach, and some fragrant Euro-savoury notes. There’s good depth of savoury flavour, some complexity and a long, dry finish. (13.5 per cent alcohol; screwcap.) Aging? No. Food ideas: Seafood pasta; tofu and vegetable stir-fry. Ralph Kyte-Powell – The Age Epicure

It’s an unusual blend. 44 percent sauvignon blanc, 39 percent riesling and 17 percent pinot gris. In some folks’ minds that might still be 44 percent too much sauvignon blanc, but it’s certainly a different set of flavours to wrap your chops around.

An exceptionally acidic wine. It’s exceptionally persistent too, but unless you’re highly tolerant of acid you’ll find this hard to take. Lemons, thistles, sherbert, and passionfruit. It’s intense stuff. There’s a Granny Smith apple element too and a huge thrust of lemon through the finish. Remarkable wine in its way - though definitely not for everyone.
