Seppeltsfield Rare Rutherglen Tokay (375ml)

Deep tawny in colour, with an olive green tint. The extremely complex nose is the essence of aged Tokay. Toffee and caramel fruit aromas combine with substantial aged rancio characters, whilst retaining intensity and freshness. The palate is profoundly rich and luscious, the quality of the original, ultra-ripe fruit shining through. Sweet caramel, coffee and toffee flavours, with perhaps a hint of earthy tar, build to a massively concentrated mid palate that reveals further layers of complexity before a clean, lifted finish.

DP stands for 'duty paid', a throwback to those days when a customs officer was stationed at Seppeltsfield. He watched where the spirit went and made sure the government got its cop. Current release non-vintage. This has that remarkable khaki-edged colour that indicates great age, and a bouquet of incredible concentration. Maybe it's overdue for a little freshening with youthful material, but it's still quite remarkable. It smells of dark toffee, nuts and vanilla and tastes fresher than the nose indicates with super-sweet, profound, complex flavour of great persistence. Simply gorgeous with Meredith blue cheese. 5 stars Ralph Kyte-Powell & Huon Hooke
