Katnook 'Prodigy' Shiraz 2006 Made from shiraz vines planted in 1994; prior to that time (and since) the small amount of shiraz at Katnook Estate was sold under long-term contract to Wynns. In that year the plantings were extended, and the first significant crop resulted in this wine, which promptly went on to win the Jimmy Watson trophy in 1998, surely a unique achievement. It also achieved an unheard of degree of ripeness, tipping the scales at 14.8% alcohol. This in a vintage overshadowed by both 1996 and 1998. For the record, the wine spends 24 months in a mix of 50 per cent new American oak and 50 per cent new French. – James Halliday
