Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano D'Abbruzzo DOC 2006
Marcello Zaccagnini and his winemaker cousin Concezio Marulli aim to prove that Abruzzi's most widely planted red variety, Monte-pulciano, is capable of producing top-class wine. This oak-aged riserva, made for the U.S. market, shows they can deliver the goods. Wine Spectator
The company ‘Azienda Agricol Ciccio Zaccagnini’ was founded in 1978 under the company ‘Fattoria Zaccagnini’. The winery is situated in the centre of the village of Bolognano (Province, Pescara. Region, Abbruzzo) approx 150 km north east of Rome. The Abbruzzi region is nestled within the mountains of central Italy and is well suited to the cultivation of grapes. While only twenty varieties are grown here, Sangiovese, Trebbiano and Montepulciano are the main grape varieties.
Yearly production is apporximately 500,000 bottles. Under the guidance of winemaker Concezio Marulli, the company uses the most modern wine production techniques and a total quality checking system to follow the whole produciton process. Four clones of the Montepulciano grape are used to enhance the final composition of the wine and it's ageing potential.
The grapes are hand picked and fermented on the skins before being placed half in Slovakian Oak barrels and half in barriques for eight months. The wine is then bottles and left for three months before release.
