Ripe, juicy and generous, this finely balanced if fuller-proportioned chardonnay backs its sumptuous array of tropical fruits, ruby grapefruit and pineapple with sweet vanilla oak, creamy lees-derived influences and a touch of minerality. It’s smooth and creamy, with an unctuous, almost fatty mouthfeel that is tightly wound in by fresh mineral acids and given direction by a powdery chassis of fine phenolics. (Margaret River, $ 45 retail, approx., 18.6/95, drink 2008-2011+) Jeremy Oliver
I tasted this a few months back and again over the weekend, and between times it's become a more settled, balanced wine - and more impressive as a result. This is lipsmackingly good. It tastes of grapefruit, lemons, some tropical fruit and toasty, mealy characters, though it's also now a wine of line and length - this sings a long way through the finish. Creamy mouthfeel, complex flavour, searing length - this is an A grade wine. Drink: 2009-2013. 94 points. Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront
Devil's Lair is an exquisite, beautifully maintained vineyard, which from its earliest vintages has developed a great reputation for the classic Margaret River varieties - Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Climate and geology combine to create an individual terroir and expression of Margaret River style.
This Chardonnay is produced from 100% Estate grown fruit and is picked over a range of ripeness levels to attain complexity whilst retaining characteristic finesse and elegance. It is very much in the Devil's Lair style, a subtle textural wine that has a complexity of flavour that evolves and develops in the glass, with no single flavours dominating.
