Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2005

SEALED UNDER SCREWCAP

A genuine 389, whose sumptuous depth of vibrant dark fruit knits seamlessly with sweet chestnut/mocha/vanilla oak and a smooth, drying spine of loose-knit tannin. Deep and heady, it’s scented with violets, liqueured cherries and dried herbs and steeped in flavours of dark plums, blackberries and cassis. Ripe but certainly not overcooked, it’s supported by a creamy structure of firm, loose-knit tannins, finishing with lingering fruit and a dusty mouthfeel. (South Australia, 18.7/95, drink 2017-2025) Jeremy Oliver

I was up for buying a few bottles of this the minute it hit my chops. Those bottles, of course, will be screwcap sealed as that is my preferred option but hooray for Penfolds for giving the consumer the choice; cork, screwcap…or both!

Oh lovely with it’s mix of blackcurrant, plum and blueberry fruit, licorice, bay leaf, cocoa and dusty vanilla oak. On the palate a wine of immediate impact and strength, striding through the mouth with purpose and grace; and it’s that combination of balance, power and structure that clearly sets it apart from most of its contemporaries. It has a wide spread of powder fine tannin, clean acid to balance and superb length of flavour. A great (and thoroughly Australian) wine. Drink : 2015 - 2025+ 96 points Gary Walsh, Winorama

Created by the legendary Max Schubert - creator of Penfolds Grange - Bin 389 is often referred to as 'Poor Man's Grange' or 'Baby Grange', in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, this was the wine that helped to build Penfolds' solid reputation with red wine drinkers. Combining the structure of Cabernet with the richness of Shiraz, Bin 389 also exemplifies Penfolds' skill in balancing fruit and oak. A classic Australian style with a clear Penfolds identity. Delivers the intensity and opulence suggested by the aroma. Layers of blackcurrant, blueberry and reduction stocks are set against a firm base of ripe tannins and finely integrated oak. An impressively solid finish with an inky, complexity and wonderful length. A prime candidate for classic Bin 389 status and long term development in the bottle. Peter Gago
