Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2001
Launched in 1993 with the 1990 vintage, Penfolds Bin 407 was developed by Penfolds Chief Winemaker, John Duval, in response to the increasing availability of high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. Inspired by Penfolds Bin 707, Bin 407 offers varietal definition and attention to detail, at a more affordable price point. A textbook Cabernet, Bin 407 is true to Penfolds' multi-region, multi-vineyard blending policy, showing a core of ripe fruit supported by French and American oak. Southcorp
Tightly defined, redolent in redcurrant, dark chocolate and black olive notes. An overt tannic firmness integrates with finely woven oak. Rich fruits and a complex, almost tar-like lusciousness define the long, fine finish. An excellent vintage for Bin 407 which will cellar well and provide a great drinking option whilst waiting for the even more substantial 2001 Bin 707 to awaken. Peter Gago
Sourced many from Coonawarra and Bordertown with small parcels of Barossa and McLaren Vale fruit also included. A bottle of 1993 and 1996 Penfolds Bin 407 in the last month reminded me of the consistent quality of this wine. Whilst I don't think it is as long lived as the Bin 389, 128 and 28 it is still a great wine in it's prime (normally around 5-7 years). This wine has everything going for it with fruit and tannin perfectly balanced. Purple in colour, the nose is dominated by blackcurrent and cherry flavours. On the palate there is plenty of sweet berry fruit which is well backed up by some grippy tannins. Great length. Cellar 5-7 years. 93/100 Anthony D'anna
