A strong effort, the deeply-hued, seductive 2004 Cotes du Rhone (primarily Syrah with some Grenache included in the blend) displays loads of berry fruit, not a great deal of complexity, but beautiful texture, softness, and silkiness. Guigal’s master blends are always consistent and uniform despite different bottling dates. 87 points Robert Parker Wine Advocate # 169 Feb 2007
Dark cherry, red berry, beef dripping, minerals, pepper and licorice. On the palate medium bodied with cherry, red berry, pan juices and spicy flavours. Nice and meaty with firm loose knit grainy tannins and balanced acidity. Finishes with a little grip and acid and meaty red berry flavours. A wise choice for a lovely weekday wine. Firstly I must say that this seems riper than the 2003, which is odd because the vintages were I believe quite the opposite, not that 2004 was cool by any means, just that 2003 was very warm. All this is not a bad thing though, because I think this wine provides a good bridge between the old world and the new world. Kirsch, red currants and red cherries, leather, minerals, and almost metallic but not tinny, spice, pepper, dry and old spices. The palate follows, glossy red fruits, some savoury minerality, good and honest length. Tremendous value for $20, or thereabouts. I liked the ‘03, but this is likeable in a different way, with such a lovely richness and no overripe characters. If you are interested in something slightly off the SA wine-route, buy a few bottles of this - you will not regret it. Drink : 2007 - 2014+ 90 Points Lincoln Scott, Winorama
Most people it seems always buy a few bottles of this wine to drink or place in the cellar. It is a good wine to drink mid-week as it keeps things interesting. The 2004 vintage of this was is a touch more brighter and not as cooked as the 2003. Parker and Halliday both loved the 2003 (and I thought it was pretty good for the money as well) and it seems that Parker prefers the 2003 Cote du Rhone Rouge over the 2004, I can see why he would. For the same reasons, I prefer the 2004. It is better balanced, has more of a structure and is not as ripe as the 2003. 90 points Anthony D'Anna
