Quartz Reef Central Otago Pinot Noir 2006

And the best individual makers between the two countries? Now that’s a dilemma. While the leading Australian pinots are quite established styles, the finest from New Zealand are younger wines that, by comparison, are works in progress. Never mind: stack up Mount Mary, Bannockburn and Bass Phillip from Australia against Ata Rangi, Felton Road and Quartz Reef from New Zealand and you’ll certainly enjoy the tussle.

Rudi Bauer made pinot noir at both Giesen and Rippon before starting Quartz Reef. He is as passionate a pinotphile as I have met. Australian Financial Review Magazine – Philip Rich - April 2004
