Stanton & Killeen Rutherglen Durif 2001
Chris Killeen has skilfully expanded the portfolio of Stanton & Killeen but without in any way compromising its reputation as a traditional maker of smooth, rich reds, some of Australia's best Vintage Ports, and attractive, fruity Muscats and Tokays. All in all, deserves far greater recognition. James Halliday
A rare grape variety brought to northeast Victoria about the turn of the century, and which may or may not be the same as California's petite syrah. Wherever grown, it makes a massively dense and potent wine, characteristics enhanced by the climate of northeast Victoria, to which it is ideally suited. Yet another example of the all-round winemaking skills of Chris Killeen, topping the Other Red Class at the 1999 Winewise Small Makers Competition, and doing so by a wide margin. James Halliday
