The book is propelled by (Australian wine industry leader) Brian Croser’s words that Australian wine is ‘perched on the edge of a cliff’. Australia is renowned for cheap, sunny, come-from-anywhere wine – the 'real story' of Australian wine often lost. At times, today, the very idea of ‘fine Australian wine’ is lampooned on the international wine stage.
This leaves Australian wine vulnerable to market attack from other ‘new world’ countries, one of which will eventually work out a way to offer similar quality as that of Australia, at a cheaper price. When that day comes, the Australian wine industry could collapse, in the way the commercial, bulk-quantity end of the French wine market has. This collapse, in France, has lead to the unlikely sight of French wine producers rioting.
WHY THE FRENCH HATE US looks at what is happening in Australian wine today, the threats to its foundations, and some of the people trying to save it – by lifting its quality profile. It’s also, more simply, an entertaining read.
