Elio Altare Barolo 'La Morra' 2001

3 BOTTLES AVAILABLE.

Loads of fresh blackberry and cherry aromas to this young wine. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a caressing mouthfeel. Long finish. This is elegant and refined for a young Barolo. Best after 2007. Score: 92. —James Suckling, October 15, 2005. Wine Spectator

I have tasted nearly every vintage of Elio Altar La Mora Barolo normale back to 1982 and have seldom been disappointed. The dark-ruby colored 2001 displays a very beautiful and delicately spiced nose, along with flavors of small red fruits and licorice. Offering excellent follow-through as well as length on the palate, it is a Barolo of much harmony and overall balance that comes across as quite classic. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019. Score: 91. —Antonio Galloni, October 2006. The Wine Advocate

The debate between modernists and traditionalists seems to be on the wane as the two schools are meeting in a middle earth of quality. "It is irrefutable that great wines emerge from both schools," writes Robert Parker Jr. (Parker’s Wine Buyer’s Guide, 6th Ed.) "In fact, the finest Barolos or Barbarescos, whether made by a modernist or traditionalist, share more common characteristics than differences." In this catalogue, Vintages offers a large selection from 1999 and 1998, with modernists such as Angelo Gaja, Elio Altare and Domenico Clerico leading the line up. Mascarello weighs in beautifully on behalf of traditional-styled Barolo. All these wines will reward long cellaring as they offer an abundance of fruit, ripe and sweet tannin, and concentration.
