Parker Terra Rossa Coonawarra First Growth 2004

Bursts out of the glass with aromas of cassis, plum liqueur, chocolate, vanilla, violets, earth and cedar oak. Richly fruited and lavishly oaked. On the palate this is full bodied and enormously concentrated with flavours of plum, cassis, mocha and plenty of vanilla/cedar oak. Thick ripe chunky tannins coat the mouth. So powerful and intense that it’s almost painful to drink at the moment. An essence of Cabernet experience at present but I’ll wager this will cellar magnificently. Drink : 2014 - 2024+ 94+ Points, Gary Walsh Winorama

The full-bodied, powerful, French-styled 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Terra Rossa exhibits aromas of lead pencil/graphite, creme de cassis, cedar, and tobacco. As the wine sat in the glass, scents of chocolate, currants, and cedar also emerged. With well-integrated oak, plenty of power and length, sweet tannin, and enormous potential, it will drink beautifully for 10-12 years. 90 points Robert Parker Wine Advocate # 148

Blended from 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot this wine will reward with careful cellaring, and will improve with decanting before drinking. Deep red colour, with a purple tinge. The nose shows lifted liquorice and blackcurrant fruit with some perfumed aromas of violets and toasted vanilla oak. The palate is firm and structured with mineral and blackcurrant fruit and a firm tannin finish.

Vintage 2004 was cool and late ripening. Tannin ripeness was delayed compared with both colour and flavour, and due to this the fruit was left to hang until late May whenthe tannins were ripe. The wines are medium weight but with very good balance, fruit expression, tannin structure and colour.

Parker Coonawarra Estate have achieved an unmatched reputation both within Australia and overseas where fine wines are revered for integrity and consistently superb quality. Commercial constraints played no part in the development of Parker Coonawarra Estate. John Parker, whose many years involvement in the wine industry resulted in a desire to produce a premium wine from Australia's premier red wine district culminated with the release of the 1988 "Terra Rossa First Growth" in 1991.

The Parker Estate Vineyard, situated at the Southern end of Coonawarra, was established in 1985 on the rich Terra Rossa soil over limestone of Coonawarra and carries Cabernet Sauvignon as the predominant variety with minor plantings of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Each vintage small quantities of the best fruit is selected for the Terra Rossa First Growth. If in any one year the grapes do not reach the high standard set, then no Terra Rossa First Growth is made, as was the case in 1992, 1995, 1997 & 2002 . In those years the wine released was under the Terra Rossa Cabernet Sauvignon label.

The First Growth is a brilliantly seductive wine with unbelievable depth of fruit, balance and structure as hallmarks of the style. Another decade or so of this performance may indeed see Terra Rossa First Growth become something of a legend. The more staid Cabernet Sauvignon has clearly been deprived of the magic ingredient. A new winery has been built at Coonawarra reflecting the growing importance of Parker Coonawarra Estate. The First Growth is well sought after by the market and is recognised as one of the region’s finest wines. It narrowly missed inclusion in Langton’s Classification because of its limited number of vintages. Andrew Caillard MW
