Majella Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

2005 is clearly a very strong vintage. The fruit has an extra degree of purity to it. This wine is spotless, generous, gorgeously curranty and yet lengthy and tannic - toast, cedar, mint and gentle cream giving it a mouth-filling quality. There's quite a bit of nervy acidity - which will settle. I love the elegance here - it's the full box and dice. Drink: 2012-2019. 93 points. Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront

Aromas of cassis, plum, coffee, black olive tapenade, a dusting of pepper, aniseed and plenty of cedary oak. On the palate full bodied with plum, cassis, aniseed, tobacco and vanilla oak. A big round ball of ripe Coonawarra fruit with rich creamy tannins and quite remarkable length of flavour. It’s great now, smart and nippy round the first corner, but I reckon there is enough in the tank for a thumping big kickdown on the home straight later on. It’s a winner. Drink : 2010 - 2020 93+ Points Gary Walsh, Winorama

Majella is one of the more important contract grape growers in Coonawarra, with 55 hectares of vineyard, principally shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, and with a little riesling and merlot in production and now fully mature. Common gossip has it that part finds its way into the Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon and Michael Shiraz, or their equivalent within the Southcorp Group. Production under the Majella label is increasing as long-term supply contracts expire. James Halliday
