Krug Vintage 1995

Krug only produces a Vintage when a crop has exceptional characteristics and sufficiently interesting features. To create exceptional vintages, the Krug family selects those wines that best express the "voice" of the chosen year. Krug Vintage is like a concerto, a joint venture between the Krug style and the personality of a certain year. The year is the soloist but the orchestra remains Krug. Krug

Krug is very distinctive," says Bruce Sanderson, senior editor and tasting director for Wine Spectator magazine. "It's full-bodied and full-flavored. A lot of people might actually find it too strong." Sanderson, though, is not among them: As with most wine critics, he is enamored with Krug.

"It's great wine, and I say great wine because it's a wine first and a champagne second," he says. "It typically comes in at the top of my champagne ratings. And the ratings I give to Krug are comparable to the ratings that we give to great wines from all around the world."

"I guess if you want to call a perfect rating heaven, then Krug is pretty close to heaven," Sanderson says. And yet, Krug remains beneath the popular radar. It is not the champagne of choice in rap videos, and it is not found, by the fridge-ful, in just about every episode of "Cribs." That's the territory of Krug's trendy tête de cuvée competitors, Dom Perignon and Cristal - even if Madonna has been known to serve brunch guests mimosas made with Krug.

If Cristal and Dom Perignon are the Rolex and Cartier of champagne, then Krug is the Patek Philippe - all quality, no "Q" rating.
