I have been drinking it for years, and it is always great value. The current version is frm a vintage that many rate equal to the '02 and is a classic example of what Clare Riesling should be: loads of citrus and buckets of acid beautifully balanced for fine drinking and a long life. I don't think anyone could accuse Boccaccio of being passive wine merchants. We don't sit on our backsides and wait for things to happen. How boring would life be if we all did that. Rather, we go out and create and experiment and sometimes we hit the jackpot. Over the next few months we have some really exciting things happening. Not only have we managed to source some extraordinary fruit from Bendigo for a couple of red wines to be released on the 1st of December but I have also been busy making trips to heart of Australia's greatest Riesling producing region: the Clare Valley.
I am proud to announce that this week we have available, the 2004 Unlabelled Clare Valley 'Free Run' Riesling 2004. Made from one of Australia's greatest Riesling producers, with access to Australia's greatest Riesling vineyards. When I first talked about doing such a wine, I was pretty strict in the guidlines I set on how this wine should be made.
Boccaccio had access to six different mature vineyards in the Clare Valley. From these six vineyards we eventually decided on one single-vineyard site for this sensational wine. When the fruit from this vineyard reached a specific set of criteria, we gave the all-clear for our contacts in Clare to go ahead and make this wine. Not that I really needed to give any guidance to a producer who has won multiple trophies and gold medals for it's Riesling's for the last 30 years.
This is a GREAT Riesling, and there is no doubt this is a keeper. Plenty of acidity and bucket loads of tangy lemon and lime flavors dominate the palate at the moment and this should age into a classic Clare Valley Riesling. I have this ranked aside many of the $15-20 Riesling's I have tried from 2004. The price? A measly $6.00 a bottle for this stunning wine. - 94/100 Anthony D'Anna
