Le Potazzine Gorelli Brunello Di Montalcino 2004

The 2001 vintage of this wine was served at Taste East last week and the just released 2004 vintage has been betting some cracking reviews around the world so I thought I better had look at a bottle.

Good thing I did as this is a cracking wine. Brunello comes in two spectrums. Firstly as big, rich, chocalately, thick fruit with big tannnins or the more traditional style which is lighter, more minerally and savoury. Think Burgundy but different. This wine falls into the latter and is very very good. Lovely perfumed nose, scents of rose petals, cherries, earth and herbs. A bit of tannin present but all in all, everything is where is should be. Drink now or to 2017. 93 points Anthony D'Anna

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a soft, delicate wine with pretty notes of plums, leather, spices and minerals. This wine was gorgeous when I first tasted it from barrel a few years ago, but the freshness and clarity this wine had in its youth has faded. Several bottles have all been soft and ethereal, with elements of dilution. The 2004 simply lacks the sheer stuffing of the finest vintages here. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016. 88 points Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate.

Giuseppe Gorelli produces wines of deep color and extract with a polished and silky texture. Production is extremely small; often only 250 cases reach the US. "One of the finest of the younger producers in Montalcino, and an estate that has not missed a step since 1988." - Stephen Tanzer
