Curly Flat Chardonnay 2005 (6 bottle limit)

Phillip Moraghan has an impeccable vineyard site in what he suspects is the coolest region in Australia – earlier this year he didn’t finish vintage until the second half of May. He grows a wide variety of clones of both chardonnay and pinot noir, and ferments scores of different fruit parcels in a score of different ways ... various yeasts, oaks, percentage whole-bunch inclusion and so on. No stone is left unturned, a good example being the 2002 vintage: in a year of drastically low crops throughout south-eastern Australia, he still crop thinned because he thought, in that year, that it was all his vines could handle. Moraghan belongs to the school of thought that doesn’t think much of the word winemaker. "If I ask you to name ten winemakers, you’ll name them. But if I ask you to name ten viticulturalists, most people will struggle to name more than two – yet the vineyards make the wines." The Curly Flat wines, not surprisingly, look terrific. Campbell Mattinson, Winefront Monthly

"Curly Flat is definitely a name to watch because the quality of fruit coming into the winery is high, and that quality is already being carried through to bottle" Lester Jesberg - Winewise
