A textbook Cabernet, the varietally expressive Bin 407 highlights the rewards of Penfolds multi-region, multi-vineyard blending, with a core of ripe fruit supported by French and American oak.
Vintage Conditions: Regular winter rainfalls ensured ideal soil moisture levels and healthy vine growth. Spring and summer temperatures were amongst the lowest on record, which reduced yield potential, as well as slowing overall crop ripening to a crawl. A warm, dry autumn eventuated, which, combined with careful vineyard management, enabled the grapes to reach ideal ripeness.
Dark red, with an ink-black core. The nose shows varietal, leafy and peppermint aromas with trademark blackcurrant, cassis and mulberry fruits. Nutmeg and cedar nuances are suggestive of recent barrel storage, yet overt oak is not discernable. Stylish and complete. The palate is lively, zesty and of great length, facilitated by mouthwatering acidity and chunky tannins. Flavours of freshly picked blackberries with perfectly integrated oak and a hint of char span the palate. A continuum of flavour and power across the palate - proudly 100% cabernet. This wine will repay medium to long term cellaring and is at least the equal to any Bin 407 back to the 1996 vintage. Peter Gago
