McWilliams Hanwood Chardonnay 2006 The best wines to emanate from the Hanwood winery are from other regions, notably the Barwang Vineyard at Hilltops in New South Wales, Coonawarra and Eden Valley; as McWilliam's viticultural resources have expanded, so have they been able to produce regional blends from across southeastern Australia under the Hanwood label which, in the last few years, have been startlingly good. James Halliday Winemaking practices not usually encountered in under $12 Chardonnays have produced spectacular results over the past few years. The grapes are sourced from various parts of south east Australia; it is what happens in the winery which creates the synergies. Partial barrel fermentation and extended lees contact for components of the wine are then blended with conventionally fermented stainless steel-fermented components. James Halliday
