For the last five years I have been making annual trips to Tuscany to talk to wineries with similar philosophies to not only import and represent these wineries in Australia but to also work on projects focusing on wines under our Fratelli D’Anna, Via Rotella label and now gigibianco label.
gigibianco is all about reviving the long lost traditions of wine varieties, styles and winemaking (hopefully all three together) that have been replaced in this modern world. gigibianco came about after chatting to the winemakers from as bygone era. Those souls that are now in their late 70's and 80's who told me how Trebbiano used to be made and how they used to drink it. Note there will be a small deposit at the bottom of the bottle due to the wine not having been stabilized or filtered.
Our first wine, 300 dozen made of a unfined, unfiltered Toscana Trebbiano aged in cement and made from old (almost derelict vines) in Tuscany shows for me, Tuscany in a different light. A light that existed before Tourism and mass market exposure of brands and marketing. If I had to pigeon hole this wine, it is. peasant wine,. Made without the use of most modern intervention. However, from the day it was fermented, it had a character and soul that has stood out and a personality that reminds me of those old souls that will soon only exist in black and white paintings....
The wines under Fratelli D’Anna, Via Rotella and now gigibianco represent what I like and expect out of a grape variety and region. It was an idea that came about by reading Kermit Lynch’s Adventures of the Wine Route who on visiting vineyards and wineries that he imported (or liked) made offers to buy selected barrels to be finished off to his specifications. When I think of this, it takes the notion of importing wine from a region you love, one step further. In this instance (and with Via Rotella as well) it is being part of the whole process top capture the purest expression of Trebbiano from Tuscany available and it is the sort of wine, you drink by the bucketload when you are there.
Sealed under screwcap, this is a wine I a super proud of. It shows why Tuscany is such a gem of region. We can offer Trebbiano from gigibianco that both show a sense of place and quality for the price.
