French labels often lead with a place. Chablis means Chardonnay, red Burgundy usually points to Pinot Noir, and red Bordeaux brings Cabernet and Merlot into the picture.
If you already know which region you like, start there and compare the village, producer and vintage on two bottles at a similar price.
Red Burgundy is usually Pinot Noir and white Burgundy is usually Chardonnay. A label that names a village tells you more precisely where the grapes grew than one marked simply Bourgogne.
For a closer comparison, taste two producers from the same village and vintage. Premier Cru narrows the origin further to designated vineyard sites.
For a Cabernet-led red, look to the Médoc on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Saint-Émilion and Pomerol on the Right Bank are good places to find Merlot-led blends.
Bordeaux also makes whites. Sauternes is a sweet white that’s especially good with blue cheese.
