Generous fruit, savoury depth and the structure to reward patience: Il Poggione’s 2021 Brunello is a compelling release for lovers of traditional Tuscan reds.
Made from 100% Sangiovese, it draws on the estate’s oldest vineyards, planted between 150 and 450 metres above sea level. The grapes are picked by hand, fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in large French oak casks before further ageing in bottle.
Black cherry, ripe plum and dark berries are layered with dried herbs, warm spice and a hint of blood orange. The palate is rich and velvety, with freshness lifting the fruit and firm, fine-grained tannins giving it shape. A lingering mineral and savoury finish adds another dimension.
This is a Brunello worth putting away, allowing its fruit, tannins and savoury complexity to come together over time. If opening a bottle young, give it a generous decant and serve with bistecca, slow-cooked beef ragù or aged pecorino.
