I’ll be honest I love Chardonnay. I also love Riesling, and the 2023 releases are as good as anything we’ve seen in the last 20 years. But right now, Australian Chardonnay is on another level and when I say ‘world class I genuinely mean it.
The best examples coming out of Australia today can go toe to toe with anything from Burgundy or Chablis. Now, it’s not often you see that kind of conversation paired with a $12 price tag. We’ve secured a mystery, unlabelled Yarra Valley Chardonnay from the 2023 vintage, made by one of Australia’s most exciting “young gun” winemakers.
His estate Chardonnay was recently listed among the Top 10 Australian Chardonnays under $90 and he’s been praised by the likes of Halliday who’s called him a ‘Chardonnay master’, Jane Faulkner, Nick Stock, Gary Walsh, Mike Bennie and Campbell Mattinson. So yeah this isn’t just any clean skin. What you’re getting here is declassified fruit wine that didn’t quite make the cut for his main label, but still seriously overdelivers. In fact, we’d comfortably put this up against many of the $25 Chardonnays on the shelf right now.
