Château La Nerthe brings remarkable poise to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. From one of the appellation’s most historic estates, this organically grown 2022 red combines the generosity of the Southern Rhône with freshness, savoury complexity and an elegant, finely structured palate.
The blend is 40% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault, drawn from vineyards planted across the estate’s varied Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroirs. Eighteen months of maturation in a combination of traditional foudres, seasoned and new barrels, and concrete allows the fruit and spice to take centre stage.
Ripe cherry, strawberry and dark berries lead the nose, followed by violet, liquorice, peppery garrigue and a subtle smoky note. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with a juicy core of red and black fruit, silky yet well-defined tannins and a lovely sense of balance. Mint, cracked pepper and savoury herbs carry through the long, polished finish.
There is plenty of pleasure here now, particularly after a short decant, but the depth and structure will reward careful cellaring into the mid-2030s. A superb match for roast lamb, duck, venison, slow-cooked beef, mushroom dishes or Provençal cuisine.
