"The wines under Fratelli D’Anna represent what I like and expect out of a grape variety and region. It was an idea that came about by reading Kermit Lynch’s Adventures of the Wine Route who on visiting vineyards and wineries that he imported (or liked) made offers to buy selected barrels to be finished off to his specifications. When I think of this, it takes the notion of importing wine from a region you love, one step further. In this instance it is the ultimate expression of what I look for in Sangiovese and Montalcino.
This wine is one barrel of 2016 vintage Brunello from a high altitude vineyards very close to the town of Montalcino that looked special the moment I first tried it. Every year I would go back and try that wine and it always to me, was the perfect expression of Brunello. There is something about the 2016 vintage that I love and it was evident from the moment it was in barrel. The best examples are pure, fragrant, with truckloads of complexity and length. The are feminine but will age for many decades to come.
Only 600 bottles are available for the Australian market. I am a traditionalist, and this wine, made from a traditionally styled estate is perfectly suited to the philosophy behind Fratelli D'Anna."
- Anthony D'Anna, Mondo Imports
It’s light- to medium-weight and it’s charming with it. This really does have personality. Pencils, herbs, game meats, sweet-sour cherries, roasted nuts and perhaps even citrus flavours. It’s a fine-fingered wine, light but persuasive, built on its acidity, deceptively well structured as a whole. It also manages to be both clean and characterful. It is indeed a delight, though it will be better again in time.
