Almost every vine in modern France is grafted onto phylloxera-resistant rootstock. This Chardonnay is different. It comes from a single 0.55-hectare parcel of old vines growing on their own original roots—franc de pied—in heavy clay soils near the village of Villy, just north of Chablis.
The estate describes this remarkable vineyard as Chablis’s sole surviving parcel of ungrafted Chardonnay following the phylloxera devastation of the nineteenth century. It is a tiny piece of vinous history and the source of a wine unlike almost anything else in the region.
The 2021 is concentrated and mouth-filling, moving from silky fruit into a gently structured, almost velvety palate. Ripe citrus and orchard fruit meet preserved lemon, rhubarb, ginger and subtle spice, with oyster-shell minerality and a persistent saline finish keeping everything fresh and precise.
This is Chardonnay with history, rarity and real presence. Drink it with oysters, scallops, grilled fish, roast chicken or aged Comté—or give it a generous glass and enjoy it entirely on its own.
