The colour is a brilliant pale straw with green hues. On the nose there expressive aromas of perfume, citrus blossom and fresh lime dominate with a talcy/mineral note evident. All the hallmarks of an excellent vintage. The palate is crisp and acid driven. Plenty of fresh lime and other citrus flavours. More delicate than recent years, the balance of palate weight, acid and barely-there sweetness creates a seamless and lengthy finish. Delicious.
Pikes Traditional Riesling has a great ability to mix friendliness with quality. It often seems quite open and fruit ‘forward’ but it keeps its length intact, and its line. This 2021 release is a beauty; chalky and dry but ripped with citrus-driven fruit. It’s not excessively intense but it’s above-average in that regard. It’s delicious. It’s elegant. And it’s value speaks for itself.
