These new releases from Poggerino are terrific. Piero Lanza makes wines of notable character that capture all the finesse of Radda. Over the last decade or so, quality has grown in dramatic fashion, driven by much gentler winemaking than in the past. The Chianti Classicos are vinified in cement and aged in either cask or cement. I find a purity in these wines that is incredibly distinctive.

Vinification and ageing
After careful selection in the vineyard, the grapes are destemmed and pressed. The alcoholic fermentation begins without the addition of selected yeasts and proceeds at 28°/30°C. The entire vinification and maceration process takes place in concrete tanks for about 35 days with manual pumping over and punching down. In December, the new wine is decanted into 20/25hl Slavonian oak barrels and 4/5hl French oak tonneaux where malolactic fermentation takes place. After 12 months of refinement, the wine is blended and bottled the following spring. The wine is aged for a minimum of 8 months before being sold.
Sensory profile
Brilliant ruby red colour. On the nose notes of blackberries, leather, cherries and red currants with a touch of licorice and vanilla. Sweet and persistent tannins.

The 2021 Chianti Classico is exceptional. A burst of ripe red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and tobacco are all dialed up in this racy, layered Chianti Classico. The 2021 was aged in 20% in cement and 80% in 20-25hL casks. It’s a serious wine that will benefit from cellaring. The Chianti Classico points to a potentially superb vintage here for the top bottlings.

Ripe and sour cherry and vanilla bean come out on the nose and again on the palate. A decisively salty, mineral streak comes through, with concentrated tannins and substantial acidity.

The picture of harmony, elegance and purity, this red features black cherry, blackberry, violet and mineral aromas and flavors. Starts out supple, with vibrant acidity and firm tannins emerging on the finish. Drink now through 2033.
